Baptism & Confirmation

Marking the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ.

Baptism is a celebration of new life in Christ and marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith. Whether you are considering baptism for a child or for yourself, we would be delighted to support you.

Baptism for Children

At the baptism of a child, parents thank God for the gift of life and choose to start their child on the Christian journey. They make promises on behalf of their child, committing to raise them in the faith, with the support of the Church.

This is why baptism – often called christening for young children – takes place within a church community. The congregation welcomes the child into the worldwide fellowship of Christians and promises to pray for them as they grow.

Godparents play an important role in this journey. They are usually close family members or friends who support the child’s spiritual growth. Godparents should themselves be baptised.

Baptism for Adults & Older Children

It is never too late to be baptised. Many people are baptised as teenagers or adults, choosing to make a public declaration of their faith in Jesus Christ.

Baptism involves water being poured over the candidate’s head, or in some cases, full immersion in water. This powerfully symbolises passing through the waters of death and rising to new life in Christ. It is a visible sign of God’s grace—forgiveness, renewal, and a fresh start in faith.

Adults preparing for baptism may choose to have sponsors instead of godparents—people who will encourage and support them in their Christian life.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a significant step in the Christian journey. It is for those who were baptised as children and now wish to affirm for themselves the promises made on their behalf.

In confirmation, the bishop lays hands on the candidate and prays for the strengthening of the Holy Spirit. It is a moment of commitment, faith, and a deeper connection with the life of the Church.
